Coming out of SEC Media Days, all but fourteen credentialed media members picked the University of Georgia Bulldogs to win the SEC East in 2018.

Moreover, 263 out of 284 credentialed media members picked the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the SEC West. It’s not painfully obvious to say fans, pundits and scribes alike know the Tide and the Bulldogs have the strongest teams.

However, Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart has done a great job fending off the hype machine by establishing a culture of “next man up” in Athens.

Georgia returns 13 of 22 starters from last year’s SEC Championship squad. Notable returning starters are QB Jake Fromm, WR Riley Ridley, inside linebacker Natrez Patrick, cornerback DeAndre Baker and safety J.R. Reed.

Offensively, the Bulldogs should be fine. Fromm has proven to be a game manager capable of making NFL throws from time to time. Elijah Holyfield, Brian Herrien and D’Andre Swift will tote the rock for the ‘Dawgs while Zamir “Zeus” White is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during fall camp.

Defensively, the Bulldogs will go as far as their secondary will take them. Dominic Sanders, Arron Parrish and Malkom Parrish have moved on. It will be incumbent upon cornerback Tyrique McGhee and free safety Richard LeCounte to step up and carry the torch in the defensive backfield.

Georgia has more than enough talent and coaching nous to win the SEC East. Whether they defeat Alabama at Mercedes-Benz Stadium December 1st, remains to be seen. As famed commentator Chris Berman once said, “That’s why they play the game!”
