Monday morning, Georgia State Senator Jason Esteves became the first Democrat to formally enter the Georgia Governorโs race. Esteves was elected to represent the Senateโs 35th District in 2022 after serving as a board member of Atlanta Public Schools.
โI’m running for Governor to make Georgia the number one place to work, start a business, and raise a family. As extreme politicians in Georgia push Trumpโs reckless agenda and rig the system for special interests, Georgians pay the price,โ said Jason Esteves, in a statement. โNow more than ever, we need to tackle the high cost of living, improve access to health care, protect womenโs reproductive freedom, lower housing costs, and invest in schools across the state.โ
Esteves has been a Georgia resident since the age of two, after his father relocated here while serving in the United States Army. Esteves also was a social studies teacher, prior to going to law school and making his foray into politics.
While serving in the Georgia Senate, Esteves continually fought to reduce food insecurity in Georgiaโs public schools. Additionally, he co-sponsored Senate Bill 128, which sends additional state funding to schools with students in poverty. He estimates the legislation would send an additional $2 billion a year in state funding to schools.
โIt starts with tackling the high cost of living โ to give our kids a better life than we had. Improving access to health care and protecting womenโs reproductive freedom,โ Esteves says. โLowering housing costs. Investing in schools all across this state. And making it easier to start a business โ and grow it. I want Georgia to be known as the number one place to work, start a business, and raise a family โ no matter who you are or where you live.โ
Other challengers
U.S. Representative Lucy McBath paused her campaign due to her husbandโs health concerns. It is also expected former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms will enter the race. Plus, challenges from two-time Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams and former DeKalb County Commissioner, Michael Thurmond, may be on the cards.
As for the Republicans, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones is the presumed front runner. Meanwhile, the Georgia Attorney General, Chris Carr, announced his candidacy in November.
In the end, Esteves believes he’s great for the job. Esteves is one of the more likeable members in the General Assembly, according to several Democratic lawmakers. He credits his wife, Ariel, for navigating two tough jobs: fatherhood and entrepreneurship.
“Ariel and I are blessed with Jaeden and Zoe โ the light of our lives, Esteves says. “Next to raising a family, starting a small business is the most challenging thing Ariel and I have ever done together. And weโve done it — twice! First โ an urgent and primary care clinic โ where it was needed most. And then โ a couple restaurants, helping create jobs and a greater sense of community. Iโve seen Georgiaโs potential โ because Iโve lived it. ย
