Atlanta Public Schools has launched a new website with information that will help parents and caregivers prepare for a strong Day One as the school district moves closer to the opening of the 2020-2021 school year on Monday, Aug. 24.

The special site helps connect visitors to the school district’s resources and provides information on academics, nutrition, technology, and much more. It also includes a robust FAQ sheet that answers a number of general questions about the school district’s opening plans.

For example, even though the school year will begin with virtual learning, APS is implementing a series of safety and health protocols, including:

  • The district will require the use of masks and other personal protective equipment for students and employees when in school buildings. Materials will be in schools for use during pre-planning week.
  • Public health signage will be used throughout our schools and buildings for reminders on health practices, protocols, and hygiene.
  • Hand washing and sanitizing stations will be provided in the buildings.
  • Regular screening for symptoms and ongoing self-monitoring.
  • Temperature checks will also be used as a screening process when entering buildings as well as additional safety measures

In response to how long the district will implement virtual learning, the FAQ sheet states, “We plan to remain virtual for at least the first nine-week grading period or until we can move to a hybrid model or face-to-face instruction. We have a monthly schedule in which we review the health conditions and inform our families and the APS community about our plans for the remaining parts of the 2020-2021 school year.”

During a July 13 special meeting, it was proposed to open the 2020-2021 school year utilizing a full virtual learning model on Aug. 24. That motion was approved on the first reading during the same meeting.

APS educators and staff reported for duty on Monday, Aug. 3, for two weeks of mostly virtual pre-planning with some in-person, small-group activities.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to visit www.atlantapublicschools.us/backtoschool to learn more about Day One, and to visit often for new updates.
