As we celebrate Juneteenth this week, we are witnessing our stock market fall to dangerous levels. There are world leaders challenging President Donald Trump by implementing retaliatory tariffs. Meanwhile, the Trump Administration is defying court orders, and of course, there is the usual partisan gridlock in Congress. It feels like America is celebrating and has seen brighter days, and maybe she has. But I have one question: Will President Trump repeal Juneteenth?

Since 1776, every July 4th, we have always celebrated Americaโ€™s founding and democracy. There’s a lot of noise and dueling conflicts in our country right now: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) rollbacks, a constitutional crisis, protests regarding immigration, ICE raids. The civil unrest, the rancor, division, and hyperbolic political rhetoric have become prolific on various podcasts and television shows. These first few months of President Trump’s second term have been tumultuous.

Elections Have Consequences

We are at a critical turning point in our nation’s existence. While watching the news or listening to podcasts, it’s easy to feel discouraged. However, the time is now to take action and get involved. We cannot let the November 2024 election stop us from sitting back and waiting for a solution. In the same way, if we start educating our youth about civics, volunteer at a food pantry, or spend time at a library learning about our history, we will have another chance at saving our democracy in 2026 if we go out and vote.

As a professional CDL driver, husband, and father of six beautiful children, I had the opportunity to run for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives in a newly formed district in Henry County, Georgia. Additionally, as a first-time candidate without high-dollar donors, political experience, or pivotal connections, I decided to step up as I pledged to serve my potential constituents, if elected.

While traveling throughout Georgia House District 81, weaving my way between rural neighborhoods and more suburban areas, I found a commonality of honesty, concern, and decency among residents. Ultimately, I was forced to face my biases and preconceived notions. I learned that most people are good-natured and only want to live peacefully and prosper.ย

Celebrating Juneteenth Amidst Turmoil

As a Black man, my experience will always be different. From being inspired by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the late Congressman John Lewis, we must remember the history of America. I am reminded by Dr. Kingโ€™s quote, โ€œWe are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today.โ€ We cannot abandon those norms. It is Trumpโ€™s second term, and itโ€™s time to decide what kind of America do you want? What I’ve learned as an American who has survived catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina, the financial meltdown of 2008, and recently COVID-19, is that our ability to face, unify, and overcome challenges gives me hope we will not lose our democracy. I believe in we the people and our ability to prevail.

Also, we can preserve our nation’s history, including Juneteenth. America, donโ€™t give up. Georgia, don’t give up. Roll up your sleeves, it’s time to fight. If we fail to fight, the damage by the Trump administration will reverberate for generations.
