The Mazda CX-5 compact SUV has been around for numerous years, but 2025’s version—manufactured in eight trims—has proven to be a successful way to keep things fresh. Specifically, my review model was presented in the top-of-the-line 2.5 Turbo Signature model, and it certainly did not disappoint. When it comes to the sleek body, driving experience, pampering appointments inside the cabin, and generous tech applications to name a few standouts, this CX-5 is a winner.

It’s sleek body, signature grille, and overall captivating hatchback body crafted by the revered Japanese Kodo design accentuates the body’s fluidity. I thought the machine gray metallic exterior (a recommended optional color for $595) perfectly complemented the 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, shark-fin antenna on the roof, and stealthy privacy tint on the rear windows.

The sporty look is paired with the upgraded heart under hood, boasting a six-speed SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, delivering a punchy 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. When using the sport driving mode and paddle shifters if that’s your thing, the ride becomes exhilarating and responsive with cat-like maneuvering thanks to the I-ACTIV all-wheel drive capability. Mazda’s MI-Drive system also offers an off-road mod and G-Vectoring Control Plus to perfect cornering.

The “Signature” trim is further validated by the interior. The Nappa leather-trimmed seats in a rich Caturra brown are ventilated in the front, along with a heated steering wheel that’s uniquely shaped for this model, plus a premium 10-speaker Bose audio system. The 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen display supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and built-in navigation system all enhanced by Mazda’s customized connected services. Other features include ambient interior lighting to set the mood, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, a customized steering wheel, a 360 degree view monitor for optimal visibility, the appreciated traffic-sign recognition to further avoid any unwanted attention from authorities, multiple parking sensors, and power liftgate to name a few. As for roominess, the cabin could be a bit snug for up to five adults, but the moonroof provides an airy feel and adds to the opulence.

Mazda’s emphasis on safety includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go which works lovely in cities with infamous traffic; Smart City Brake Support; lane departure warning; driver-attention monitoring for the easily distracted and long-distance excursions; and rear cross-traffic alert. I suggest visiting the website below to get a full run down for the long list of other high-tech applications to ease the mind.

If there is one drawback to this otherwise impressive compact SUV, all the muscle and driving mechanics deliver a subpar fuel economy averaging 24 miles per gallon, but the need for speed must pay a price. Regardless, I would drive in the sport mode any chance I got; it’s just that much more fun and worth it.

Altogether, if performance and a luxurious cabin are your priorities in a subcompact SUV shielded by Mazda’s reputation for reliability, the CX-5 Signature appears to be a worthwhile choice.
