One of the most popular crime television shows is going to focus its latest episode on one of Atlanta’s most high-profile murders.

NBC’s Dateline will explore the murder of late Atlanta tech entrepreneur Lance Herndon, which took place in his home in Roswell in 1996. There have been a number of crime shows (Oxygen’s Real Crimes of Atlanta: Season 1, Episode 1), podcasts, and books (See: Redbone by Ron Stodghill) that explored Herdon’s death, but this will be the first time Dateline takes on the case. The episode “The Killer Among Them” is scheduled to air tonight at 9 p.m. ET.

One of the podcasts that focussed on the case is Sinister with its host Ericka “Boze” Bozeman. Season 1, episode 5, titled “Shame, Sugar, Shame,” tells the story of Herndon and his accused and convicted murderer Dionne Baugh. Bozeman will make an appearance on the Dateline episode and took time to talk to The Atlanta Voice earlier today.

The Atlanta Voice: How did it feel to be asked to appear on an episode of Dateline?

Ericka Bozeman: “On one hand, it’s exciting. On the other, when you look at what Dateline is and how long they have been doing it, it’s such an honor. Just knowing that Dateline has the capacity to get those additional interviews, and get this story right, It’s so exciting to be a part of that.”

AV: Are you a fan of Dateline? Are you planning to watch the episode tonight?

EB: “Absolutely. I’m just stoked to be a part of it. I think this is going to be one of the most thorough coverages of Lance’s case ever and that’s what I’m excited to see. Dateline does not play.”

AV: What intrigued you about the Herndon murder case?

EB: “I do a lot of cases, but Lance’s story itself is amazing. A young, successful Black entrepreneur in tech. He lived a really glamorous life, and that itself is interesting. Then you introduce this vixen who feels entitled to his love and money and will do anything to keep him. It’s just really fascinating.”

AV: Why do you believe this case remains so interesting to television networks, podcasters, and the like?

EB: “When you look at a lot of media that covers this case, people call Lance the Black Gatsby. Atlanta knows best why they still hold on to this story.”
