The Atlanta Voice Internship Program
The Atlanta Voice Internship Program is designed to instruct college students in real-world journalism techniques and principles. Under the supervision of our staff, interns will create written content for our print and digital editions, photographic and video content, and social media content. Interns will also participate in professional development sessions, panels and workshops facilitated by The Atlanta Voice, the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, and other professional journalism organizations. The internship will conclude with a multimedia journalism project that incorporates all of the skills practiced during the program.
Week 1
Interns will be introduced to The Atlanta Voice’s history, purpose, staff, and operations. They will also be introduced to the public as the managing editor’s (print) selectees. Interns will introduce themselves to the staff and one another, and will be briefed on their expectations and responsibilities as members of the program.
Week 2
Interns will receive initial story assignments, and familiarization with the one-week schedule that drives production of our weekly print edition. The process of creating written content will be supported and supervised by the managing editor (print) from ideation to submission. Students will receive instruction on news writing techniques, including AP Stylebook standards. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 3
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and will also be required to pitch weekly story ideas. Students will attend a professional development session this week. Along with learning from professionals in the business, professional networking tips will be emphasized. Students will receive instruction on writing development. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 4
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and will receive instruction on creating social media content that supports their digital and print content. They will find three examples of news writing that resonate professionally, and explain why. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 5
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and pitch at least two story ideas. They will be instructed on interviewing techniques (notes, recorders, research, etc.). They will be required to interview one another, and then write articles based on their interviews. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 6
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and pitch at least two story ideas. They will receive instruction in basic photography. Photography techniques will be utilized in support of the week’s print and digital articles. Students will receive instruction on editing print and digital articles. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 7
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and pitch at least two story ideas. They will receive instruction in basic videography. Video techniques will be utilized to create content that supports print and digital content. Students will receive instruction on utilizing press releases and proper sources. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 8
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and pitch at least two story ideas. Interns will begin work on multimedia project. Multimedia project will be supported by managing editors of print and digital. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 9
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and pitch at least two story ideas. Interns will continue work on multimedia project. Multimedia project will be supported by managing editors of print and digital. Interns will receive feedback on the week’s work.
Week 10
Interns will receive weekly story assignments, and pitch at least two story ideas. Students will complete work on multimedia project. They will also receive their program evaluation, certificates of completion and course stipend.
