The Grady Knights came into the Friday’s game against Woodward Academy hoping for a much-needed win, after dropping their opener to North Atlanta last week.
Unfortunately, Woodward Academy’s quarterback Mike Wright and running back Tahj Gary had other plans.
The Knights looked good early. On their opening drive, quarterback Alvin James II connected with Jordan Jones for an 80-yard touchdown reception.
The War Eagles would respond with a touchdown to tie things up at seven. From this point on, the War Eagles would score 42 unanswered points going into halftime. The Knights could not get anything started offensively and failed to cross midfield during that span.
On the first play of the opening drive from halftime, Alvin James II would find Nathaniel Wiggins for a 80 yard touchdown reception to give the Knights much needed momentum.
As the War Eagles did all night long, they responded when Mike Wright completed an 80 yard touchdown pass to Ambe Caldwell to make the score 49-13.
As the game went on, the Knights would add two more scores but the War Eagles proved to be the better and talented team winning 58-27.
Wright would finish the game with four total touchdowns including a 45 yard rushing touchdown.
“He is a good athlete overall. He has been struggling with the pain in his arm but played very well tonight,” said assistant coach Jimmy Hyer.
As for the Knights, coach DJ Banks gave credit to Wright but also acknowledged they have a young team and that things could have been better.
“Our team kept fighting,” said Banks. “We have a lot of sophomores and juniors on our team and as we mature as a team, we will be able to be better in games like this.”
The War Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season and will face Blessed Trinity at home next Friday.
