As you enter Uncle Jack’s Meat House (6590 Sugarloaf Pkwy) in Duluth, you get the sense that this experience was planned out way before you started your trip here from a nearby neighborhood or another part of Atlanta. The staff, the ambiance, and the smell are all masterfully crafted and then carefully balanced to seize your senses…and that’s before you’ve even seen the menu.

We tried a variety of their “Scratch Plates” and “Munchies” which all were well apportioned and thoughtfully presented. I liked the “Crudo” Style Seared Ahi Tuna, but my top suggestion is the Charred Spanish Octopus.

Plated hot with a chickpea puree, spicy olives, capers, well placed pickled red onion strands, and a bright orange palette pleasing smoked pepper sauce. You pierce into a chunk, and then slide it across the plate into the mix of fresh chickpea puree and toppings.

As it enters your mouth there is a welcome crispiness on the plump tentacles, yet it was tender and juicy on the inside. Anyone who loves octopus, squid, and the like will tell you… the texture is everything.

I thought that must simply be the pinnacle of this meal, but I was quickly reminded by a display case full of perfectly aging meat, that this experience was only beginning…
