Monday morning, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Georgia Tech senior forward Moses Wright was named Player of the Year. Wright has been a force in the paint this season averaging 18 points, eight rebounds, and almost two blocks per game. It was reported that Moses Wright won the Player of the Year voting by a landslide as he received 33 of 76 total votes.

Wright transitioned from the power forward to the center position in Tech’s small ball lineup and excelled. Playing the center position has made him an athletic mismatch in the paint, shooting 54.4% from the field. When he rolls out to the perimeter he shoots an outstanding 39.3% from deep. Wright now becomes the first Yellow Jacket to make the All-ACC first team since Alvin Johnson was selected in 2001. Wright was also named to the ACC All-Defensive Team.

“It’s like, night and day, honestly, coming this far and getting ACC player of the year,” Wright said. “This is an amazing feeling. I feel like I accomplished so much and there’s just so much more out there for me to accomplish, too.”

Senior guard Jose Alvarado secured the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors along with an All-ACC second team selection. Alervado averaged 15.5 points, four assists and three rebounds during the regular season. He also led the conference in steals with almost three takeaways a game. Alverado is a true floor general with a fluid shot, great passing instincts, and the ability to guard any team’s best player.

“I’m just so happy,” said Alvarado. “I can’t believe it. I can say later on in the future that, hey, I won ACC defensive player of the year one time.”

Wright and Alverado made history as the only Tech duo to both be named to the ACC All-Defensive Team. The team also finished with its highest conference finish since 2004 with an 11-6 ACC record. This performance secured the Yellow Jackets the fourth seed in this year’s ACC Tournament and a strong chance to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
