R&B songstress Shemida J spices things up with the release of her latest single “Kinky.” Named after BSDM film that came out on Oct. 12, the sultry shares the same seductive tone as the movie.
“Kinky” highlights Shemida J’s sexuality as a woman. While it may be somewhat taboo for women to be open about their sexual desires in today’s society, Shemida J doesn’t shy away from the topic.
Cast members of the film include the legendary Vivica A. Fox, Dawn Richard, Darrin Henson, and more.
Her record made it on the soundtrack of the movie after her team was approached with the project idea.
“One of the producers that we’re putting the soundtrack together thought it would be cool for me to submit some material and I went ahead and wrote something because I got a sneak peek of the trailer,” said Shemida J.
The musician embraces her body and pushes for more women to be comfortable in their skin and confident enough to discuss their sexuality as men do. She believes that there is a significant stigma on women who express their sexuality in today’s society especially for women on Instagram.
“I’ve heard things such as the word “Instagram model” is bad, but if you feel good, I think you should have all the freedom to express it without being shamed,” Shemida J said. “ I think the more confident you get within your body, it okay to express it.”
Shemida J says this double standard is because of one thing, “it’s a man’s world.”
“A man wants a woman that is a lady in the street and freak in the bed. I think women have done amazing jobs pushing through and making sure we’re heard and not put in this little corner,” she adds.
Artists like Beyoncé are women that Shemida J applauds for expressing their sexual wants even while being on a large platform. According to her, married women with children are often seen as people who should be conservative and reserved, but everyone is sexual beings to a degree.
“I think it’s awesome to embrace it versus shaming it,” Shemida J said.
With the release of “Kinky,” Shemida J is gearing up to release her EP “She” which will be released in 2019. She hopes to bring a transparent version of herself with relationships, sexuality and going for what she wants.
Shemida J’s love for music continues to inspire her, and in the next three to five years, she wants to have her music played on radio stations across the country and touring.
