The Carolina Panthers will acquire New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater signing the Louisville product to a three-year, $63 million contract, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. Carolina informed current starting quarterback, Cam Newton, he is free to seek a trade (or be released). Right now, Newton’s contract is on Carolina’s books.

First, the Saints were priced out of the market when the Panthers submitted a contract offer that priced them out of Bridgewater’s services. In the past two seasons, Bridgewater learned under starting quarterback Drew Brees and current Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who was an offensive assistant with the Saints when the quarterback arrived from the New York Jets in 2018.

Bridgewater, 27, endeared himself to Saints fans by winning all five games he started from weeks three through seven in the 2019 season. In weeks five, six and seven, Bridgewater completed 68 percent of his passes while averaging almost 280 passing yards per game. He threw seven touchdowns against one interception while amassing a 108.4 passer rating.

Meanwhile, Newton says he never asked for a trade. Cam responded to Carolina green-lighting any trade by saying on Instagram, “Stop with the word play. I never asked for it. There is no dodging this one. I love the Panthers to death and will always love you guys! Please do not try and play me, or manipulate the narrative and act like I wanted this; you forced me into this! Love!”

Carolina has parted ways with linebackers Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly, plus defensive end Mario Addison, tight end Greg Olson, guard Trai Turner, head coach Ron Rivera and now arguably one of the best players in team history, Cam Newton in the span of two years.
