Jeremy Stevens led the Hapeville Charter Hornets to a 24-0 win over the Douglass High Astros Friday evening at Lakewood Stadium.
The Hornets came into this game ranked number one in Class AA and wanted to make a statement against the Astros who also are undefeated. On the other hand, the Astros were looking to prove that they are the best in region 6-AA.
Jeremy Stevens and the Hornets wasted no time getting downfield on the opening drive, capping it off with an eight-yard rushing touchdown by Stephens to lead 7-0.
The stout Hornets defense managed to make the Astros go three and out giving the offense another opportunity for points. Instead, the Astros defense stayed strong forcing the Hornets to settle for a field goal extending the lead to 10.
Juan Powell and the Astros offense constructed a long offensive drive that put them in scoring position at the Hornets six-yard line. After Douglass decided to go for it on fourth and goal, the Hornets defense forced Damontay Mckibbens to fumble leaving the Astros no points to show for their drive.
Both defenses held each other in check to keep the score 10-0 going into halftime.
The Astros offense was able to construct another drive and managed to chew up ten minutes of offensive possession in the third quarter. However, the Hornets defense held strong again forcing the Astros to a turnover on downs with no points to show for.
On the ensuing offensive possession, Stephens’s 17-yard rush to extend the lead to 17.
After gaining control of the game, the Hornets inserted Jordan Slocum at quarterback. Slocum put the game on ice after rushing in from eight yards to make the final score 24-0.
However, Stephens finished with two rushing touchdowns and lead both teams in rushing.
Hapeville will take on the South Atlanta Hornets Friday, Oct. 5.
As for the Astros, they will look to rebound against the McNair Mustangs next Friday.
