Thursday evening, a filly named after Breonna Taylor won the fourth race at Churchill Downs. The filly is owned by Sam Aguiar, the lawyer who represented the Taylor family against the Louisville Metro Police Department.
“We’re still fighting for justice for Breonna Taylor, and so anything to put a smile on our faces is good,” Aguiar said.
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, The Aguiars own about 20 horses and told The Courier-Journal they are donating the race’s $10,000 purse to the Breonna Taylor Foundation, a nonprofit the Taylor family formed in 2020.
“My wife named the filly Breonna because she was beautiful, strong, and resilient,” Sam Aguiar said. “She’s tough and has swagger. But to those closest to her, she’s also loving and kind. That was Breonna Taylor as well.”
Sam Aguiar bought Breonna, a mahogany filly with a chestnut mane, as a 2019 Christmas gift for his wife. She received her official name last July, Janelle Aguiar said.
“(Breonna Taylor) was just getting on the right path and getting things together and had dreams and aspirations,” Janelle Aguiar said. “And I think that just really touched my heart, that that could have been me, that that could have been any young girl.”
