Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. This year, it will be marked on Saturday.

Veterans Day began in 1919 as Armistice Day, marking the date when Germany and the allies signed a 1918 agreement to cease World War I hostilities.

Earlier in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, saying:

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.”

To salute U.S. military veterans and thank them for their service, Hollander Senior Living and Memory Care of Sandy Springs will host a complimentary breakfast buffet for military veterans starting at 9 a.m. on Nov. 10. Veterans are encouraged to wear their military garb. VEO West Lake Campus

Join VEO Veterans, Staff & Volunteers for our Annual Veterans Day Celebration, presented by FedEx Cares. Bring your friends & family and join us for a day of celebrating the brave men and women that ensure that our communities across the nation remain safe. The keynote speaker for the event will be John Butler, a Vietnam veteran who works for the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association (AVVBA). The US Army Color Guard will present the colors for the program. The Varsity will provide hamburgers and hotdogs. A volunteer team from FedEx will undertake a campus beautification project for the VEO’s memorial garden at the campus.


Veterans Portrait Project

The nationally-acclaimed Veterans Portrait Project will open as a special exhibition at Atlanta’s Woodruff Arts Center on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Since 2008, wounded veteran and combat photographer Stacy Pearsall has traveled the country to capture the spirit of America’s veterans. She has created exceptionally personal portraits of more than 6,000 veterans who’ve served during every conflict since World War II. Forty-four of Pearsall’s framed portraits will hang in The Woodruff Arts Center’s Beauchamp C. Carr Gallery from Nov. 17 through Jan. 15, 2018. Digital images of hundreds of veterans will enhance and broaden the exhibition experience.


Ebenezer Baptist Church Coffee Talk

Under the pastoral leadership of Raphael G. Warnock, PhD., the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church will host a special Coffee Talk for veterans at the Highland Bakery in Old Fourth Ward. There is no specific topic that will be discussed, more of an event to say “Thank you” to our veterans, connect and fellowship in the community with Veterans and the pastor.

This year marks the 36th annual Atlanta Veterans Day Parade, presented by the Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association. Volunteers from Veterans groups, active duty military and civic minded community members fulfill all tasks. This year’s parade is the 31st annual Veterans Day Parade in Atlanta. About 13 years ago the organization began hosting a Grand Ball on the evening of the Parade. The Freedom Ball will be on same Saturday night of the Veterans Day Parade at 1800 hours at the Oceans Ballroom of the Georgia Aquarium.

PARADE ROUTE The Parade will start at 11:11 a.m. and will begin in Downtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street south of Ralph McGill/Ivan Allen Blvd. The Parade will proceed south on Peachtree Street, turn right on Baker Street towards Centennial Olympic Park, The World of Coca Cola, and Georgia Aquarium. It will continue on Baker Street and turn left onto Marietta Street. The parade will end at the intersection of Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Marietta Street. RECOMMENDED PARKING The Parade route follows some of the most accessible streets in Downtown Atlanta. With the reviewing stand being located near Centennial Olympic Park, many spectators park in one of the many pay lots located near the Park.

You may also want to park at the Georgia Aquarium or World of Coke parking lots and enjoy their attractions after the parade.

Please remember that area streets may start closing as early as 8:30 that morning in support of the parade, so please allow extra time when making your way to a parking location. We also encourage our participants and attendees to utilize MARTA as an alternative to driving.


DAV 5K to Honor Veterans

The DAV 5K Run to Honor Veterans is a run, walk, roll and motorcycle ride that thanks those who served and raises awareness of the issues our ill and injured veterans face every day. The DAV 5K National Series is presented by DAV (Disabled American Veterans), a nonprofit organization that helps more than 1 million veterans in life-changing ways each year. The events help further the mission of DAV to ensure our injured heroes are not alone on their road to recovery. Atlanta History Center

The annual Veterans Day program at Veterans Park will feature a keynote speech by Joe Galloway, one of America’s premiere war correspondents and co-author of the international bestseller, “We Were Soldiers Once… And Young,” which was adapted into the acclaimed movie, “We Were Soldiers.” Galloway, a Bronze Star for Valor awardee who recently retired as the senior military correspondent for Knight Ridder Newspapers, is considered a storyteller par excellence of the theater of war. Inside the atrium after the ceremony, there will be information for the Veterans History Project and Atlanta History Center membership as well as for the USO. Launched in 1999, the Veterans History Project has conducted 600 veteran interviews. Admission to the program is free and open to the public. Active and retired military, veterans and up to five members of their families will receive free admission to the entire Atlanta History Center campus.

In honor of those who have served in our armed forces, Georgia Aquarium will commemorate Veterans Day as part of our Military Salute programming on Nov. 11. All active military and veterans will receive complimentary admission to Georgia Aquarium all day on Saturday, November 11. Family members will receive 30% off general admission. At 12 noon, please join us in the Aquarium’s main Atrium for a color guard presentation by the Kennesaw Mountain High School NJROTC Color Guard. Other activities that will take place from 11:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m. include:
• Enjoy a special video on our stone wall demonstrating Georgia Aquarium’s Military Salute programming including our Veterans Immersion Program, reenlistment support, Military Mondays and Gold Star Initiatives

Freedom Ball

The Georgia Veterans Day Association, Inc., will host the 2017 Freedom Ball the evening of Nov. 11. The Freedom Ball is the association’s annual formal gathering and will be held at the Oceans Ballroom in the Georgia Aquarium. An estimated 500 guests will gather to pay special tribute to our Veterans and to the men and women who are serving our Nation today.  Guests will include leaders and representatives from all Veterans Service Organizations, Active Duty military members, corporate sponsors, and members of corporate military groups. Major General James E. Livingston, MOH, USMC (Ret.) will serve as keynote speaker. The event has been themed “WWI Centennial.” Tickets are $75 each or $750 for a table of 10.


Veteran’s Day Promotions

Atlanta Zoo – Atlanta, GA — Veterans and active-duty members of the military enjoy free admission (military I.D required). Accompanying friends and family members enjoy $4 off general admission for up to six guests.

World of Coca Cola – Atlanta, GA — November 2 through November 12, there is a special promotion to members of the Armed Forces (Active duty, Reserves and Retired) and their families. Complimentary admission to members of the Armed Force and during this special period, members may also purchase up to four General Admission tickets for their family and friends at a discounted rate of 50% off.

Georgia State Parks Free Golf – all veterans and active military members can play a round of golf for a cart fee of just $18 (carts required) at Meadow Links Golf Course at George T. Bagby State Park & Lodge in Fort Gaines, and Wallace Adams Golf Course at Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge in Helena. Play free at Blackshear on 11/5 and 11/10.
