Rep. Sheila Jones honors local recipient of service award
State Rep. Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta) recently honored Ola Reynolds at the State Capitol with the Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus Servant Leadership Award on March 5, as a part of Women’s History Month. The Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus Servant Leadership Award is given to women who have shown invaluable service to their communities and to the State of Georgia. Reynolds has been active in the Atlanta community for more than 40 years. She is a resident of the Monroe Heights Community and an advocate for community development, education attainment, and sustainability of affordable housing for all. Award recipients also attended a reception at the Capitol, where First Lady Deal spoke to the group of honorees.
Eighth Annual Youth HIV/AIDS Walk
Grapevine HIV/AIDS Foundation and Simply United Initiatives Foundation presents the 8th Annual Youth AIDS Walk. Participants will assemble at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 29 at the King Center at 449 Auburn Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30312, and walk to the Georgia Capitol located at 206 Washington Street. Atlanta alumnae Deltas present Celebration of Women 2014
Celebration of Women, the annual signature luncheon for the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel (One Hartsfield Centre Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30354). This fundraising affair will benefit scholarship recipients and provide funding for the organization’s Betty Shabazz Academy, the Delta GEMS, and the EMBODI project (for young men). The celebration pays tribute to women who are “Empowered Leaders Impacting the Global Community” and is the platform for the presentation of scholarships and awards. Tickets for the Celebration of Women fundraising program can be purchased at $70 each.
East Atlanta history book signing
Thee Friends of East Atlanta Library will host an author talk and book signing with Henry Bryant and Katina VanCronkhite from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, in the East Atlanta Library meeting room. Their new book is “Images of America: East Atlanta.” During the talk, the authors will discuss some of the little-known history and share some of the digital images and stories that were not included in the book. First annual future leaders college and career fair
Boys2Men will partner with local Georgia colleges and universities recruiters to host their first annual “Future Leaders” College and Career Fair, an event that will give local students a resource guide to a brighter future.
