The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church brings outdoor gospel jazz to East Lake

 ATLANTA - In celebration of the 100th anniversary, The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church will host “Gospel Jazz on the Lot” at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 at 1879 Glenwood Avenue SE, Atlanta. Entertainers for the evening include T. Renee Crutcher, the feature headliner; and other performances by JK and the Groove Master Band, Our New Dimensions, and other local talent.  

This event also is a way to celebrate Father’s Day.

Reserved table seating for the concert is available for $15 - $35 per person. Reserved tables for eight people are available for $120 - $280. Attendees, who wish to bring their own chairs, may enjoy the concert for $10 per person. Tickets are available in the Kingdom Connection Bookstore at The Grove and online (www.pineygrovebapt.org/announcements/gospel-jazz-on-the-lot). Concert-goers are invited to bring their own refreshments or to purchase food and beverages from on-site vendors.

The Grove will celebrate its official centennial anniversary in August and move into its new sanctuary on the church campus on Saturday, August 2.  Other events surrounding the opening of the new church will be held throughout the month of August.

Emory to launch tour of Battle of Atlanta sites

ATLANTA (AP) - Emory University is launching a self-guided tour of sites related to the Battle of Atlanta. The tour will be accessible via the web link: BattleAtl.org that is to go live before the Wednesday, June 18 launch.

The Emory Center for Digital Scholarship plans to launch the mobile tour of locations throughout the city as the 150th anniversary of the battle approaches. The smartphone-friendly tour will include maps, historical information, photos and videos, as well as parking suggestions.

A launch celebration and demonstration is set for June 18 at the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum. Another event on Thursday, July 17 at Emory’s Robert W. Woodruff Library will include a small exhibit of historical photos and materials.

The Civil War Battle of Atlanta took place on July 22, 1864.

MARTA hosting transit-based scavenger hunt

ATLANTA (AP)- Atlanta’s public transit system is urging people to ditch their cars for a transit-based scavenger hunt. MARTA’s second annual Dump the Pump Scavenger Hunt is set to kick off at noon Saturday, June 14 at the Five Points MARTA station.

Teams of four to six people will have to use clues left in MARTA stations. They’ll solve riddles based on Atlanta’s history to make their way around town. MARTA says the scavenger hunt is a great way to explore the city and try to win prizes.

Registration ends at midnight Thursday or once all the slots are filled on MARTA’s website.
