NFL Divisional Play-off Round Should Be Exciting
If the NFL divisional play-off round can be as exciting as Wild-card weekend, fans will be in for a treat. The games will feature this season’s top quarterbacks in action. The weekend kicks off Saturday at 4:35 p.m. (FOX) with the New Orleans Saints traveling to Seattle to avenge a regular season loss to the Seahawks. The Indianapolis Colts at the New England Patriots will follow at 8:15 p.m. (CBS).
On Sunday at 1 p.m. (FOX) the Carolina Panthers will host the San Francisco 49ers, followed by the San Diego Chargers at the Denver Broncos at 4:40 p.m. (CBS).
Falcons hire former Vikings coach Tice for OL
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - The Atlanta Falcons say Mike Tice will become their new offensive line coach. The team announced the move Wednesday. Tice replaces Pat Hill and Paul Dunn, who were fired after the Falcons completed a 4-12 season. Atlanta also dismissed defensive line coach Ray Hamilton. Tice is charged with improving a beleaguered line that allowed quarterback Matt Ryan to be sacked a career-high 44 times.
Hawks request waivers on F Cartier Martin
ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Hawks have waived forward Cartier Martin. The move was announced Tuesday by general manager Danny Ferry. Martin signed with the Hawks during the preseason and appeared in 25 games with two starts. He averaged 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 17.5 minutes per game.
UFC Comes to Gwinnett Arena Wednesday
Ultimate Fighting Championship brings a full slate of mixed martial arts fighting to the Arena at Gwinnett in Duluth Wednesday, Jan. 15, starting at 4 p.m. There are 11 matches on the bill and the main event should be a slugfest with Luke Rockhold (10-2-0) taking on Costas Philippou (12-3-0).
Georgia Tech begins 2014 without starting QB
ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia Tech has begun 2014 searching for a new quarterback after Vad Lee announces he will transfer to another school. Lee, a rising junior, went 7-6 as the Yellow Jackets' starter, ending his career in Monday's 25-17 loss to Mississippi at the Music City Bowl. Justin Thomas, a rising sophomore, is listed No. 2 on the depth chart behind Lee. Georgia Tech has lost five of six bowl games under Johnson, eight of nine overall.
Savannah St no match for No. 9 Baylor
WACO, Texas (AP) _ Joshua Montgomery had the hot hand in the first half for Savannah State, making four 3-pointers and scoring 14 points against Baylor. Then the No. 9 team in the country made an adjustment. Montgomery scored just one point after the Break as Baylor broke out for an easy 80-50 victory Friday night. Montgomery was the lone bright spot for Savannah State (2-12), which has lost 10 straight.
