Editor's note: Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy III, whose famed father, the Rev. Ralph David Abernathy Sr., marched along side of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr during the Civil Rights Movement and led The Southern Christian Leadership Conference after King was assassinated, launched CivilRight2kno on Monday, April 7. The official statement expressed below are solely those of the author.
I am proud to stand today on the steps of City Hall in New York City with my friends to launch the CivilRight2kno movement in America in support of the Legislative Label Bills introduced by Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (AB3525) and State Senator Kenneth LaValle (SB3835) to label foods Genetically Modified Organisms (“GMO”) and Non-Genetically Modified Organisms (Non-GMO) whereby the people have the choice of knowing whether or not they’re eating genetically modified food. It is our pledge to work for the passage of this New York landmark legislation calling for mandatory labeling of Genetically Modified Foods and to take this movement across this great nation in support of legislation for labeling laws across America.
Standing with me are New York State Senator Velmanette Montgomery; my Brother, Dr. Robert Waterman, Pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY and President of the African-American Clergy and Elected Officials Organization; New York State Senator Malcolm Smith; Bishop James Morrison, President of the Baptist Ministers’ Conference in Greater New York City; Tim Marvin, Consumers Union; Bishop Townsley; Rev. Anita Burson; Eric Weltman, Food & Water Watch; Mark Dunlea, Director of the Hunger Action Network of New York State; Jessica Allen, CEO of Watchful Eye; other distinguished pastors and civic leaders and most importantly some 20 high school teenagers from the Redemption Christian Academy, Troy, New York.
We stand on the one simple principle of liberty our freedom to choose which is taken away from us when our civil right to know is violated. We have a civil right to know what is in the food we eat and know whether we eat GMO's or not and we demand our right to choose! We stand united as we launch today the CivilRight2kno movement.
For the past 20 plus years in America we have been eating genetically modified scientifically altered foods without our knowledge, our voice nor our vote which is a threat to liberty and our individual right to choose protected under our nations Declaration of Independence. Our nation’s most cherished symbol of Liberty that stands here in New York is threatened when our CivilRight2kno! is violated. Therefore we stand united with a new generation of leadership with one common thread of liberty and justice for all” “We have a CivilRight2kno - GMO.
Thank You and God Bless You!
