FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - An event at the Fayetteville Public Library featuring Maya Angelou has been canceled.

In a statement, Angelou says she's recovering after an "unexpected ailment'' sent her to the hospital. Fayetteville Public Library officials say Friday's event will not be rescheduled.

The 86-year-old Angelou was born in St. Louis but spent much of her childhood in the south Arkansas town of Stamps.

Angelou did not disclose the nature of her illness but asked for thoughts and prayers for her recovery. She says she looks forward to another visit to Arkansas.

She wrote: "I will be getting better and the time will come when I can receive another invitation from my state and you will recognize me for I shall be the tall Black lady smiling.''
