Jaylyn Neal, Clark Atlanta University’s “Man of the Year”, received a proclamation from Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall for Neal’s effort to support The Campaign To Keep Guns Off Campus. Last spring, Neal, who is a junior TV and film major, and four other contestants collected signatures and participated in a public service announcement against guns on college campuses.

Gaelon Farquharson, of Rocky Creek Elementary School in Hampton, won the first Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award to be given to outstanding teachers statewide this year. The recognition program is sponsored by Symetra, SunTrust and the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta Falcons spokeswoman Julia Lauria said awardees typically get one or two nominations but Farquharson’s five was remarkable.

Navy Seaman Jasmine S. Harris, who is a native of Lithonia, recently completed a routine transit through the Suez Canal aboard USS Harry S. Truman. Harris is a 2012 graduate of Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain.
