ATLANTA- The Atlanta Xplosion of the Independent Women’s Football League will be off the next two weeks before their next game against Huntsville (June 8). The respite couldn’t come at a better time for their coaching staff, which is concerned about their offensive line and penalties that cost them at least three touchdowns in their May 18 game against Chattanooga.
Never mind that they beat the visiting Locomotion 66-0 at Campbell High School Stadium.
“Yes, we won, but we should have had a couple of other scores ( three were called back on blocking-in-the-back penalties). That troubles me,” said Xplosion offensive coordinator Gerald Mitchell.
“Anytime you have offensive penalties like that, it’s big.”
“We still aren’t playing the kind of fundamental football I want them to play,” added head coach Zeric Foster. “I’m looking down the road, if we make the playoffs, at other teams in this league who do.”
The Xplosion racked up 479 yards of offense against Chattanooga while their defense held the Locomotion to only 148. Atlanta’s leading ground gainer for the third straight game was former South Carolina basketball star Lauren Falohun. She rushed 15 times for 307 yards and scored eight of the teams’ nine touchdowns.
Chattanooga’s leading rusher was Kiara Mitchell who ran twice for 37 yards. Their quarterback Schaundra Loveless was second with 29 yards rushing; and she completed two of 14 passes for 36 yards but was intercepted twice.
Despite the win, the Carolina Phoenix still lead the IWFL’s southeastern division and remained undefeated at 5-0 after their latest win, 49-7, over the Washington, D.C. Prodigy. The Xplosion, currently in second place and the Phoenix will meet again June 22 in Durham, N.C.
