Many sports commentators spew their belief that Tiger Woods’ five-year drought when it comes to winning Major tournaments proves he’ll never catch up to Jack Nicklaus.

But actual players on the Pro Golf Association beg to differ. At Monday’s media preview for next month’s Tour Championship by Coca-Cola tournament (Sept. 19-22) at East Lake Country Club, defending champ Brandt Snedeker gave the Atlanta Voice exclusive insight into the way his peers think of Woods’ chances of eventually surpassing Nicklaus’ record of 18 Major wins.

“I think we all know he’s going to,” said Snedeker, who took home the $1.4 million top prize after winning the Tour Championship at East Lake last year. “It’s a matter of when.”

“Most players realize that he’s playing some of the best golf that we’ve ever seen,” Snedeker added. “It’s going to happen. We just don’t know when.”

The Tour Championship pits the top 30 players in the world against each other and, barring injury, Woods is expected to contend. He currently has 14 Major victories to his credit.

Woods is currently in first place in 2013 FedEx Cup point standings with 3,059 points in 12 events played; five of which he won. Snedeker is in third place in the standings with 2,293 points in 19 events played; two of which he won.

“I’ve got a massive hurdle in front of me,” said Snedeker. “I’ve got Tiger Woods in front of me. He’s probably the best ever, so to try to beat him when he’s playing his best is going to be hard to do. But it drives me every day.”

Daniel Shoy, Jr., the Chief Operating Officer of the East Lake Foundation, said the Tour Championship has help to transform a community that once suffered from rampant crime, poverty and academic failure.

“Over the last 15 years now, it’s contributed almost $16 million, and for us that’s tremendous,” Shoy said.
