My Black Is Beautiful tour stops in Atlanta
My Black is Beautiful Live visited Atlanta (March 19) on its annual nationwide tour. Hosted by Tasha Smith and BET’s Alesha Renee, the second season spotlighted Atlanta’s own Kandi Burruss, local entrepreneurs, notable celebrities and beauty experts as they discuss the portrayal of African-American women in the media and popular culture.
The My Black is Beautiful campaign was created to celebrate African American beauty and to encourage black women and young girls to define and promote their own beauty standard. One of the goals of the My Black is Beautiful initiative is to inspire and encourage future generations to adopt a new mindset in how they view themselves and uplift the way African Americans are portrayed in society.
Co-host Tasha Smith told The Atlanta Voice, “I am proud to be apart of such a positive campaign. My Black is Beautiful means to be inspired, confident and to spread love with one another, to have compassion and determination.”
The My Black is Beautiful Live event featured free massages, facials, and mini makeovers by beauty experts of Pantene®, Olay® and CoverGirl® Queen Collection. Women from around the city jammed to the DJ stylings of MC Lyte.
Kisha Mitchell Wiliams, Multicultural Brand Manager and Pamela Rhett, Assistant Multicultural Brand Manager, the creators of the My Black is Beautiful program for Procter & Gamble had the idea for the program based on the need to send African American women a different message then what’s presented in mainstream media.
“We found research that stated that more than 80% of African American women are unhappy,” Williams said. “This represents such a large percentage of our targeted consumer group. Procter & Gamble wants to send a different message and in launching season 2 be present in social media and have more of a dialog with our consumers and be apart of creating a positive image of African American women. “
Atlanta women received encouragement, pampering, and were surrounded by love and positivity as the My Black is Beautiful campaign moved one step closer to letting women of color know that their black is beautiful. “This is about uplifting and celebrating black women,” Williams said.
